There are big ambitions for the development of the open countryside in Denmark, with room for wild nature, afforestation, recreation, agriculture, renewable energy (RE) and much more. How to make room for it all, however, is a big challenge.

With its new Nature Promotion Plan, renewable energy developer Momentum Energy Group A/S offers a concrete proposal on how renewable energy projects can help solve this challenge without compromising either climate or nature.

“As a developer and owner of renewable energy plants, we are not only suppliers of green power, but also managers of large areas of land. This gives us a special responsibility to take care of nature, so that we contribute more and not less nature, for example when we establish a solar plant. With our Nature Promotion Plan, we are at the forefront of how we can produce green energy while contributing more and better nature.” says CEO Kim Madsen.

The nature promotion plan has been developed in collaboration with the consultancy Urland, which has included knowledge from leading players such as the Danish Society for Nature Conservation, the Danish Ornithological Society, Aarhus University, the Danish Hunters’ Association and agriculture through the consultancy firm SEGES Innovation.

The climate and biodiversity crisis are closely linked challenges that require changes in the way the landscape is developed. That’s why Momentum’s Plan for Nature Promotion focuses not just on planning land for one purpose, but on planning holistically in multifunctional and versatile landscapes that benefit both animals and people in the short and long term.

“When we create renewable energy projects, we have a unique opportunity to create nature with a higher quality than on existing farmland, which takes up much of the Danish landscape. When we create a renewable energy project, we take responsibility for the land, and with that comes a responsibility to contribute to a better future where climate and nature go hand in hand.” says Kim Madsen.

Specifically, Momentum’s Plan for Nature Promotion has set out some dogmas for how nature and biodiversity should be supported together with a renewable energy plant. Momentum’s dogmas are:

1. We create cohesive and multifunctional landscapes

2. We leave natural areas of higher quality than we received them

3. We work broadly with biodiversity – locally and nationally

4. We ensure local anchoring

5. We create new knowledge for the benefit of society

“The nature promotion plan is our tool for working purposefully to create better nature throughout the entire lifetime of the renewable energy project – from the first screenings of a site to installation and operation and to dismantling when the plant is no longer in operation. We are already using the plan in practice as a tool in our work to develop new renewable energy projects, and we hope that Momentum can set new standards for how climate and nature initiatives can contribute to a more sustainable future,” says Kim Madsen.
